Recent HSE Prosecutions
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is the regulator responsible for enforcing workplace health & safety laws. Prosecutions can arise from investigations following incidents, reports or inspections, especially there has been serious injury or risk of death, or where breaches are deliberate or grossly negligent.

The following summary of recent HSE prosecutions make an interesting read.
Case: KM Carpentry, April 2024
- Incident Summary: Falling equipment due to improper sequencing.
- Breach/regulation: Section 2(1), HSW Act.
- Fine & Cost: £8,000 + £6,974.
Case: Alba Construction, February 2024
- Incident Summary: Fall through stairwell – lack of edge protection.
- Breach/Regulation: Working at Height Regulations (2005) & HSW Act.
- Fine & Cost: £40,000 + £1,800 (company), £2,000 + £1,800 (director).
Case: Balfour Beatty, September 2024
- Incident Summary: Fatal scissor lift fall – lack of control and co-ordination.
- Breach/Regulation: LOLER 1998 Regulation 8(1).
- Fine & Cost: £285,000 + £21,800.
Case: Alt Berg/P Turnbull, June 2024
- Incident Summary: Asbestos exposure – no survey or safe controls.
- Breach/Regulation: Section 2(1), HSW Act; Regulation 4(4) CDM 2015.
